An employer should use the completion of the project of the project as an opportunity to evaluate whether its efforts to develop and maintain a safe workplace were successful. If they were not completely successful and there is more that can be done, planning should commence to enable continuous improvement.
This may be achieved through refining policies and procedures, providing additional training to site supervisors or other employees or evaluating the safety performance of subcontractors.
Once this process has concluded, safety documentation may need to be updated. Updated safety documentation will provide for a clearer, more comprehensive, set of instructions which site supervisors can follow and implement on future projects.
This may involve cutting back areas of the safety documentation which did not prove helpful in developing or maintaining a safe workplace (unless it is prudent to record such information to demonstrate all the reasonable steps you have taken to exercise management and control of the site or fulfil other safety duties which you have) or increasing the detail in certain sections to act as a prompt.
It is important to consult with your employees and seek their input in this process.
