Awards
Besides the Young Builder awards last year, Master Builders awards that David and his team have won include Best Multi Unit Development for up to 3 units in 2016 for Clifftop Retreat – Serenity, in Hepburn, and the 2013 Custom Built Home of the Year for South West Region for 19B Hermitage Avenue, Mt Clear. He is an avid supporter of the Master Builders awards program and what it can do for your business.
“We really think the awards are a brilliant part of the Master Builders. It’s great to see the industry come together and catch up with different people across the industry,” he says.
“There is a lot of support from the team who run the awards. I can’t stress enough how useful and important it is to be involved in the awards at any level, nominating or winning. It is such a bonus for your business,
“We can link a lot of business back to winning awards and the exposure you get from the awards is all positive. I would encourage anybody who has the opportunity to enter any project at a state or regional level to do so. It’s a very complex process to judge awards like this and the process the Master Builders use is as fair as any.”
David Moyle’s ambition, drive and focus are contagious. He is one of those people who seems to have it all together, and it’s probably because he does.
The Ballarat builder has been a Master Builder since 2012 and in five short years has chaired the Ballarat Sector, and now the Country Sector and subsequently been on the Council and now Board of Management. He was also last year’s [2016] Young Master Builder of the Year (residential) for both Victoria and Australia. But it’s his family that are always first priority. His wife Marcella is pregnant with their third child and they already have 3.5 year old Isabella and 1.5 year old Georgia.
Family has always been the biggest influence on David’s life. His grandfather, Ken Webb, built homes in the Ballarat region during the 40s and 50s employing about 100 staff. Displaying what seems to be the family pragmatism, Ken then opened a supply business when he started having trouble sourcing materials. The Webb business was only sold recently to a local chain.
In much the same way, David seems to manage all of this life and career with a quiet confidence, innovative spirit and calm.
“I was always focused and knew what I wanted to do,” he explains.
David completed his VCE at Ballarat Grammar School in 2000 and went on to do a carpentry apprenticeship with Ballarat Builder Peter Jones. He completed this in 2005, joined the Master Builders Association of Ballarat in 2002.
“After my first project, a challenging multi-unit development I just went on to bigger and more complex projects from there.”
He established Ballarat Construction Management (BCM) in 2005, shortly after gaining his Domestic Builder Unlimited license, and now turns over up to $10 million a year. David then gained his Commercial Builder Limited license in 2008. But despite his qualifications and increasing client base, turnover is something David has made a conscious decision to keep a lid on.
“We don’t aim for quantity but quality,” he explains.
“Our style of work is elaborate and high end and I’ve kept our turnover to below $10million so we can keep a focus on that quality.”
This focus on quality is evident in the project David says he is most proud of, the BCM head office in Hummfray Street, Ballarat.
“This pretty much epitomises everything that BCM is about,” David says.
“We spent considerable time finding a suitable site close to the CBD. Spent two years designing something that is unique and showcases quality and took 12 months to construct," he said.
“We use it as a showcase for our work and it has been really well received and won a host of awards for design, construction methodology and quality of construction”
Among these awards are the 2016 Master Builders Excellence in Construction Award for Commercial Buildings under $3M, the Architizer A+ People’s Choice Award for best façade and the Australian Institute of Building Victorian Professional Excellence in Building Award for best team leader.

Likewise, David sees his involvement in sector committees and Master Builders governance as a mutually beneficial relationship.
“I’ve always been really interested in giving back to the construction industry as much as possible,” David explains.
“Joining the Country Sector (5 years ago) was a chance to report on local issues and give the country a voice. It’s a really good thing to be involved with, even if you can’t be on the committee, he says.
“Being chairperson has given me a great opportunity to speak to members and given me a strong understanding of local and economic issues”
David was elected to the Board of Management in 2015.
“Being on the BOM is an excellent position, a high level opportunity to manage all areas of a large business and building relationships with builders at all levels across the state while dealing with local and national issues,” he says.
“It’s a privilege to be able to serve in these roles and report back to our members.”
BCM utilise their membership as well as any Master Builder. David encouraged anyone thinking of joining Master Builders or any current members to attend Trade Nights in their region.
“It’s a fantastic evening giving you information on a range of issues and an opportunity to meet and talk to staff about any issues,” he explains.
“If you want to get involved then go along, it’s a no brainer.”
Like many members, BCM also make use of the free legal service available.
“We’ve had a few contractual enquiries that we just needed advice on and they will shed as much light and information as possible,” he says.
In the main though, David says Master Builders contracts are simple and easy to use.
“Master Builders contracts are simple and easy to use,” David says
With Master Builders’ most used contracts online, David explains how he saves the templates for future use.
“We use Master Builders for all of our contracts and now have got to know them very well so we know which parts to refer to and can always call up to discuss anything we aren’t sure of.”
BCM also uses Master Builders free OHS advice.
“We refer to the OHS department often and engaged them to do site audits for us for anything we may have missed,” David explains.
“They have a great understanding of everything that is required. I’d strongly urge anyone on any site to get the OHS department involved so that they can advise on anything you may need to do.”
David has also used Master Builders training for his staff.
“We’ve used training for a number of our staff and there is a really high level of training. Heavily discounted for members and a high level of competency for training,” he says.
“And with the Building Leadership Simulation Centre, it’s training at a whole different level,” he continues.
“The BLSC is a state of the art training facility. The ability to do what they can do down there and immerse people in real life scenarios is amazing.”
David counts the West Gate Bridge and Rialto Towers among his favourite Victorian constructions, having grown up in the 80s and 90s knowing them as iconic Melbourne structures. He also rates a modern, Master Builders structure among his top ten. Grocon’s AAMI Stadium.
“AAMI Stadium has an amazing design and is such a complex building.”
In his spare time, when not spending time with his family, David enjoys his helicopter and aeroplane licenses. But his passion and ‘hobby’ seems to be building and construction.
