A period home close to the centre of town with no heritage overlays isn’t easy to find in a town like Castlemaine. The owners of this home, once a tiny, run-down two-bedroom cottage, were charmed by the property’s facade and its history. They opted to retain rather than demolish the existing house instead adding a large contemporary extension. Designed for entertaining, clever partitioning separates the original property with its private master suite and sitting room from the modern, Scandinavian-inspired extension where living, dining, kitchen (including wine cellar) and bathroom spaces open to a stunning outdoor living area including a pool and landscaped gardens.
This 100-year-old dwelling was renovated by demolishing and removing some of the existing double brick single dwelling. The clients wished to preserve the history of the original family home as well as blending the new works seamlessly with the old. The theme was minimalistic modern contemporary internally but matching the original period style character externally. Polished concrete floors were to meet the beautiful replaced timber floors to bring the two centuries together. The four-metre ceilings are complemented with full height joinery which create a spacious feel. The outdoor area overlooks the swimming pool with the ability to close itself off to create a cosy atmosphere around the suspended outdoor fireplace.
