Members are to be advised that the City of Melbourne has released a new Code of Practice for Building, Construction, and Works which sets out the requirements that must be put in place at construction sites to ensure the safety and comfort of the public.

Following review and consultation, a new Code of Practice for Building, Construction, and Works was adopted by the Future Melbourne Committee of Council at a meeting on 15 February 2022.

Master Builders submitted feedback on the draft Code of Practice for Building, Construction, and Works (Code).  The Code will enable the construction industry to more effectively plan their projects, while providing clearer requirements in relation to managing public safety and amenity while protecting our assets.

The Code will take effect on 17 March 2022.

The new Code coincides with the upcoming launch of City of Melbourne Services online, which will bring digital permits to construction activities at the end of March 2022.

The Code of Practice includes information on:

  • Permits, works planning and documentation
  • Hoardings
  • Gantries, hoisting zones and site sheds
  • Perimeter scaffolding and catch fans
  • Cranes
  • Skips and rubbish chutes
  • Excavations and crossings
  • Barricades and signs
  • Noise abatement.
