Steps to becoming a registered builder

Did you know that to engage in work directly for a client that is worth more than $10,000 you are required to be registered?

Qualified tradeperson
  • Completed your apprenticeship with an accredited training organisation

  • You are now working with a registered builder gaining practical experience

  • Work under $10,000 direct for consumer
×
Uni/TAFE graduate
  • Completed a higher education qualification in Building and Construction
  • You are now working with a registered builder gaining practical experience
  • Work under $10,000 direct for consumer
×
Experience
  • Working with a registered builder to gain experience in all aspects of building work
  • Experience includes end-to-end construction in classes 1 and 10
  • Experience must be in the area of registration that you are seeking
  • Hands on practical experience
  • Work as a project supervisor or site foreman

Qualification

It is recommended that additional training, for example the Certificate IV in Building and Construction, is undertaken to help fill the knowledge gaps that are typically experienced by budding registered builders

VBA application
  • Submit a hard copy application to the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), attend the computer based test and the interview assessment
  • If successful, the VBA panel will grant your registration
Qualified tradesperson

Completed your apprenticeship with an accredited training organisation. You are now working with a registered builder gaining practical experience Work under $10,000 direct for consumer.

Registered Domestic Builder

Those registered in the class of Domestic Builder (Unlimited) are responsible for carrying out, or managing or arranging the carrying out of all components of domestic building work for the construction, renovation, improvement or maintenance of a home (class 1, 2 and 4 buildings, and associated class 10 buildings, as classified in the Building Code of Australia).

Tradesperson

Registered Commercial Builder

A registered Commercial Builder is responsible for managing and arranging the carrying out of all components of building work for the construction of commercial buildings and structures (Class 2–9 buildings and structures, and Class 10b buildings not associated with a domestic building, as classified by the Building Code of Australia)

Qualification

Most classes of Limited registration require you to have studied the following units of competency: 

  • Arrange building applications and approvals (CPCCBC4026A or CPCCBC4026)
  • Produce labour and material schedules for ordering (CPCCBC4005A or CPCCBC4005)
  • Select and prepare a construction contract (CPCCBC4003A) or Select, prepare and administer a construction contract (CPCCBC4003).

Qualified tradesperson

Limited Registered builder

Those who hold a Domestic Builder (Limited) class of registration are limited to carrying out, or managing or arranging the carrying out components of domestic building work limited to their classes of domestic building work

Are you trade qualified?

Do you have 3 years experience in the building and construction industry? (not including time spent in an apprenticeship)

Have you worked under a registered builder?

Have you completed a Certificate IV or Diploma in Building and Construction?

Have you worked as a project manager?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an initiative driven by the Victorian Building Authoroty in Victoria. The program is available to all Registered Building Practitioners in Victoria.

CPD is about keeping up with changes in the industry and gaining the skills and knowledge that will enable you to effectively operate and grow your business.

Under the program it is recommended that practitioners earn a specified number of CPD points through participating in a range of learning opportunities and activities. Activities include occupational health and safety and business skills training, meeting attendance, apprentice supervision, Trade Nights etc.

Master Builders Victoria keeps track of all CPD points accrued by members through participation in Master Builders CPD activities.
