Unfortunately, members from our Materials Manufacturers and Suppliers Committee have raised concerns that there are some imported Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) products on the market that have not been appropriately tested and certified for their intended use.
Master Builders wants to remind our members that failing to meet the testing rigours of AS/NZS 4357 puts you, your business, trades, projects and clients at risk.
If you find that you have non-compliant products on site, they shouldn’t be used, replace them with compliant products to ensure the work that you carry out meets the minimum required level of safety and structural integrity.
Members are further reminded that the National Construction Code (NCC) prescribes a pathway for industry to use a verify of product such as LVL’s that are suitable for use. Refer to Part A5 of the NCC 2022 which explains the evidence needed to show that the NCC requirements have been met. \
There are various pathways to demonstrate framing complies with the NCC. For LVL’s compliance can be met by complying with AS 1720 – Timber Structures, further noting LVL’s will need to be manufactured and have structural properties in accordance to AS/NZS 4357.
The specific branding requirements of AS/NZS 4357 allow for clear identification of the product in the marketplace and in service, which can be linked to design guides, published design properties, and limitations of use.
Here is an example of what you should be looking for to verify your product has been certified:

Remember to always contact your supplier or have a discussion with your building surveyor if you are not 100% sure your LVL’s are compliant.
Make sure you ask for a Certificate of Compliance from the Manufacturer and a copy of the Chain of Custody documents.
