Master Builders has welcomed news that the Andrews Government is fast-tracking $40 million to establish the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority for commencement of work on two underground rail tunnels to improve Melbourne’s public transport system.
While funding for the project is yet to be obtained by the government, the improvements will represent one of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects and create 3500 jobs at peak construction of the pair of nine-kilometre tunnels.
Master Builders Chief Executive Officer Radley de Silva said that the announcement was a welcome step towards a positive future for public works in Victoria that will help create jobs for the building and construction industry.
“At a time when we have seen engineering construction works hit a five year low, the loss of the multi-billion dollar East West Link was a particularly heavy blow both to jobs and much needed infrastructure projects for our state.”
“Victorians are clamouring for improved rail connections and more infrastructure works. We hope this is an indication of the State Government’s desire to commence other projects like removing dangerous level crossings and investment in new other suburban road upgrades,” Mr de Silva said.
“As our region grows, it is vitally important to build momentum on these kinds of infrastructure projects to ensure that Melbourne and greater Victoria remains an attractive place to live and do business.”
The Herald Sun reported that Daniel Andrews will be approaching private investors to bankroll the rail tunnel by asking them to commit up to a third of the funding.
Construction is expected to begin in 2018 with the “second city loop” to be completed by 2026.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said that if the Melbourne Metro Rail was not built now, Melbourne’s public transport system will grind to a halt.
“We’re getting straight to work, creating thousands of jobs and building the projects our state needs,” she said.
