Lekeal Pty Ltd and Zauner Construction were given top honours on Friday night at the North East Master Builders Regional Building Awards, held at Commercial Club, Albury.

Lekeal Pty Ltd was named Residential Builder of the Year (North East) for their execution of a Yarrawonga home that envelops interior spaces with hard stony, surfaces in a warm, earthy palette.

A principal feature of the home is the semi-underground media lounge entertainment area that features a spotted gum timber-lined ceiling and polished concrete flooring.

“Lekeal has done laudable work in shaping a very comfortable domestic environment that strikes the right balance between inward-looking and outward-gazing spaces, and the view to the flora of nearby Lake Mulwala is hard to beat,” Master Builders Association of Victoria CEO Radley de Silva said.

Zauner Construction was named Commercial Builder of the Year (North East) for the second consecutive year, this time for their construction of Trinity Anglican College’s new senior school in Thurgoona. The works comprised a double-storey building (south wing) and single-storey building (north wing) and all associated earthworks and external paving.

“The building plan looks to break down the form of the traditional classroom by using walls that are offset, angled and openable to define spaces without hard edges,” Mr de Silva said.

“Institutional buildings always offer a substantial challenge to achieving something extraordinary, because the budgets are typically stretched thin while spaces need to achieve a high degree of functionality.”

Lekeal Pty Ltd will now compete in the Victorian Excellence in Housing Awards to be held on 13 October in Melbourne. Zauner Construction will compete in the Victorian Excellence in Construction Awards to be held on 4 August.
