Master Builders Victoria has provided its submission to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DEWLP) in response to its Continuing Professional Development for Builders and Plumbers consultation paper.
Master Builders Victoria has long supported the implementation of a mandatory CPD program to improve skills, knowledge, and workmanship across the building and construction industry. Such a program must provide benchmarks for key areas including legislative compliance, technical compliance, and occupational health and safety. However, it should also be sufficiently flexible to adapt to the needs of industry. Among the options listed in the consultation paper, Master Builders Victoria has therefore advocated for Option 3: Introduce CPD requirements with a mixture of compulsory and non-compulsory subjects.
It is important that such CPD training be industry-linked and delivered through a variety of formats to accommodate a range of participants such as those residing in regional areas. Additionally, any potential administrative burden resulting from reporting requirements can be mitigated through digital technologies such as online portals.
The submission was based on feedback received from our sector committees, member engagement online workshop, and member survey.
