The new extended ‘Border Region’ of around 50kms comes into effect from midnight tonight (Friday 4 September 12:01am).
This will allow those in the Border Region to apply for permits to travel across the border for work in building and construction.

The new permit allows a resident within the border region to enter NSW for the purpose of:
- To attend work or obtain educational services (where it is not reasonable to do this from their state of residence) – this relates to the building and construction industry
- To obtain necessary good or services
- For care or other compassionate reasons
These are the only reasons that a permit will be issued for.
A Border Region NSW resident who holds a permit:
- is authorised to enter Victoria only for the reasons allowed in their permit (see above)
- Must not travel to any part of Victoria that is outside of the border region or is a COVID-19 area of concern.
A Border Region Victorian resident who hold a permit:
- Is authorised to enter and remain in NSW only for the reasons allowed in their permit
- Must not travel to any part of NSW that is outside of the border region.
Must not enter NSW if the resident had travelled in restricted areas of Victoria (currently Greater Melbourne) or a COVID-19 area of concern in Victoria within the previous 14 days.
