It offers a rich blend of burnt orange steel and sweeping curved off-form concrete and is positioned on the site to maximise the northern access and stunning views. A prior relationship with architect meant there was a reliance on the experience, skill and knowledge of the builder to execute a highly detailed and refined home to the architect and owner expectations on-the-go. The harsh, but beautiful, environment factored strongly in the design and liveability, with energy efficiency and self-sufficiency at its heart. Bold, yet respectful of its site, it is a beautiful place to retire to at the end of the day, watch the materials patina and appreciate the sunset.
Shepparton Villages was designed to create a community atmosphere for the residents. To achieve this the building incorporates central courtyards which provide opportunities for natural light to stream into the facility. Each wing has been given a street name and the dining and living areas are large and inviting. The resident’s bedrooms have been specifically designed to feel like home. The considerations of high-care (Dementia) patients are taken into account and this particular wing has been specifically designed to avoid locked doors and enclosed spaces. The external fencing and landscaping were selected to avoid creating an isolated feel.
The project was designed to replace the outdated original section of the home with an attractive, light filled and practical space, providing sleeping quarters and wash rooms to complement the living and kitchen areas. Solar passive design was a large consideration in the orientation of the building. The form and scale of the building was to complement the existing living section with the roof pitch, shape and materials matched to the existing dwelling; the wall cladding is a blend of corrugated galvanised iron and coloured render, which is a continuation of the existing external. The corrugated iron was both a cost saving exercise as well as a low maintenance cladding which works well in the rural setting.

The design was customised from the builder’s award-winning Vancouver display home to suit their 100 acres just out of Benalla. The owners had been farmers most of their lives and were looking to retire on their land with a new home specifically designed to suit their needs. The home is to be a sanctuary the couple can enjoy well into their retirement. Situated with extensive 360-degree views, the landscape became a major feature from the kitchen window looking up through the valley towards the hills. This was achieved by using a large fixed glass window above the kitchen as well as a second fixed glass window in the dining area. The extended entertaining alfresco area situated off the main living area also captures the sweeping scenery of the area.
The aim of this project was to break the on-going cycle of large site cuts and extreme concrete sleeper retaining walls that were present throughout the estate. The scope was to provide a family home which could be sectioned off into three different zones: a kid’s section, a parents retreat and entertaining area. There were three main objectives with the clients brief, minimise the amount of retaining walls, provide a driveway that was a 1:6 gradient and finally, capture the amazing view that Levena has to offer.
The house was designed to maximise the amount of natural light and take in the bush views. Although not a large home in comparison to others in the area, the design includes floor to ceiling windows in the main living area to promote space and light. Featuring a modern rustic twist, the builder and owners worked directly with the architect to achieve this stunning result. Through a strong collaborative relationship, this home was destined to command a presence of modern elegance in a street of traditional homes.

An extra wide hallway showcases the client’s artwork and leads onto two guest bedrooms while the large master bedroom opens onto a private courtyard and includes a retro-feel ensuite.
This build came with a range of key points in a very specific brief. Designed to capture the expansive vistas on the site, the home needed to be functional, sit within and blend into the surrounding hillside, be energy efficient and be low in maintenance. From this, and with overarching input into the design, material selection, siting, and all construction management, Hedger Constructions was able to complete an outstanding build fulfilling all criteria. The home was to be off grid and suit a lifestyle for an occupant who had a busy work schedule. This meant ease of use and low maintenance were key.
The project brief was to build a modest but chic holiday home at the base of Mt Buller to accommodate two families. It had to be low maintenance and be able to withstand the harsh winters and hot summers of this climate. The design takes advantage of the wonderful views of both Mt Stirling and Mt Buller. Built on two levels, it features two master bedrooms with ensuites and private living space upstairs with expansive indoor and outdoor living overlooking the mountains on the ground floor. The lower level was cut into the earth to provide stability and protection from the elements, as well as staying within the building envelope
This luxury home is an example of contemporary Australian rural architecture at its finest. A dramatic mix of burnt orange steel and sweeping, curved off-form concrete, it is set on a picturesque site on an east-west axis to maximise Northern access and stunning views. While the landscape is stunning, it can also be harsh, with temperatures ranging from sub-zero to 45 degrees. Environmental considerations were important for liveability. Energy-efficient thermally broken window frames, a 20kw off-grid photovoltaic system, rainwater harvesting and re-use all contribute towards a comfortable home now and into the future.
The development includes one two-bedroom unit and two three-bedroom units in the heart of Bright, to be used for holiday accommodation in the very popular North-East Victoria region. The clients were eager for all three units to have a similar aspect, without being identical. The aim was to give the look that they belong together, but also to appeal as an upmarket holiday rental which differs from other holiday accommodation. An external Glenrowan stone rock facade, expansive kitchen, and open plan living are key features of this project. They offer an ascetically pleasing appearance for the holidaymaker who is visiting beautiful Bright.
The development consists of a number of individual chalets located on the side of the main ski run at Mt Buller. Each chalet consists of a ground level garage with main entry, drying rooms and ski storage. There are three levels above each consisting of a three-bedroom apartment with ensuites, expansive living and dining zones accented with feature fireplaces and external terraces to the north. The apartments are accessed via stairs and lift and each has electric panel heating and double glazing. Each chalet has angulated roofs with snowguards and heat trace elements for the control of snowshed.
The scope of works set out by the owners was detailed and precise. First and foremost was to deliver a home that was solar efficient; fully off the grid and self-sustainable but also at a realistic and affordable price. Secondly, it needed to be positioned in a way that not only fit into the surrounding landscape but also used the outside elements to help heat and cool the home without placing a huge strain on the stand-alone solar system. Thirdly, and just as importantly, was to achieve a family home that was functional and suitable for the owner’s day-to-day lives.
This property at Beechworth is a superbly functioning family home incorporating three bedrooms, plus study. This home was designed to make the most of a large, lightly sloping block and to promote a natural sentiment within the outdoor areas. Much planning went into its position on the site with a "twisted roof" structure to the gable on the eastern side of the central ridge; the Northern aspect for this home is optimised with the major axis running east-west, promoting excellent passive design features. The building’s thick, "double-skinned" external walls are covered in a combination of metal cladding with feature areas of Corten steel and timber features. The protective rammed earth wall at the entrance gives hint to the significant thermal mass embodied within this ultimately comfortable home.
Together with the architect and Bright Beginnings owner, Afonso Building Solutions created an Early Learning Centre that maximises on the space given while maintaining an effortless flow throughout each section of the centre. The design flourishes with creativity and growth, both inside and out. Each decision was well researched and thought out, to create a centre that had learning knowledge and fun in every aspect, from the texture used in the landscaping to the ability to open rooms to create larger spaces when needed.
The project involved the partial demolition of the existing building, and construction and extension of the science centre. The centre was built on a sloping site in the middle of an operational secondary school. The project needed to be handed over in two separable portions, the first part noted as early works enabling the school to have access to one end of the building throughout the construction period. One of the most challenging aspects of the site was the levels from east to west and how to create the building and surrounds in a way that linked the space and a hub for gathering. The scope included using commercial principles, energy saving building practices along with detailed and careful landscaping to integrate the science centre into the school.
Following on from a successful Stage 1 project at the Notre Dame College - Shepparton (Science Centre), the new Arts Centre (Kennedy and Crane Learning Community and Arts Centre) comprises a double-storey structure constructed out of exposed feature precast panels with Reckli images. Structural elements of the ground concrete slab, suspended concrete slab and concrete precast panels provided the basis for the Arts Centre to grow. A collective team approach between clients and architect and design team once again ensured that the Notre Dame Arts Centre will be a key feature of the school in years to come.
The Shepparton Villages project was constructed on a Greenfield site across two levels totalling 8500sqm. Much of the design was developed to create a community atmosphere for the residents. To achieve this the building incorporates central courtyards which provide opportunities for natural light to stream into the facility. The resident’s bedrooms have been specifically designed to feel like home. The décor was specifically selected to present a vibrant feel. Opportunity to involve residents in activity is seen throughout the facility in the form of bowling, roulette, and a gymnasium. Additional patient amenity is catered through with a hairdressing salon and medical rooms.
