The volume of engineering construction work done in Victoria grew by 6.7 per cent during the June 2021 quarter but is still down (-6.1 per cent) on this time last year.
In total, the volume of engineering construction work done was valued at $4.4 billion during the June 2021 quarter.
Over the past 20 years, an average of $3 billion worth of engineering construction work has been done in Victoria each quarter across Victoria.
While the overall volume of activity is down on last year, there have been strong gains in the value of construction work relating to roads, highways and subdivisions (+11.6 per cent) and bridges, railways and harbours (+19.6 per cent) in Victoria over the past year.
Nationally, engineering construction work done on behalf of the public sector constituted just under half (46.1 per cent) of the total done during the June 2021 quarter.
However, the majority (61.7 per cent) of engineering construction work done for the public sector was carried out by private sector construction companies.
Looking forward, a total of $72.50 billion worth of engineering construction work was still underway at the end of June 2021.
Of this
- Heavy industry, resources and mining projects worth $21.19 billion were in progress;
- $17.13 billion related to bridge, railway and harbour projects;
- $15.92 billion worth of road, highway and subdivision work was underway; and
- $10.78 billion in electricity construction projects was yet to be done.
