Master Builders Victoria (MBV) commends the Allan Labor Government's commitment to fast-tracking hundreds of new homes for Victorians as part of the significant expansion of Richmond’s Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre.

Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny announced today that the Labor Government has approved the construction of 827 new homes as part of the redevelopment of Richmond’s Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre, with 10 per cent of the homes dedicated to affordable housing.

The Victoria Gardens redevelopment is expected to create approximately 390 jobs, with more than 1,000 ongoing jobs supported upon completion of the project. The Government says this initiative not only goes some way to addressing the housing shortage but will also stimulate economic growth and job creation in the state.

MBV CEO Michaela Lihou applauded the announcement as timely, practical and positive.

“We welcome the government's initiative to fast-track the development of these new homes, particularly in established suburbs like Richmond, where there is a high demand for housing. This expansion in a popular area not only addresses the housing shortage but also creates job opportunities and boosts the economy,” she said.

“Victoria is currently leading the country in dwelling approvals, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting our building approvals rose by 3.2 per cent in March. This is a welcome positive sign for both the building and construction industry and the Victorian economy.”

Ms Lihou said the Richmond redevelopment supported the Government’s landmark Housing Statement, which is aiming for 800,000 new homes to be built over the next decade.

“And importantly, this Richmond project is a great example of a practical solution to increase housing in a popular area where people want to live. We look forward to more similar initiatives,” she said.
