Master Builders Victoria welcomes the State Government’s decision today to allow building and maintenance works to recommence in occupied premises in Melbourne.

This decision is effective from 11.59pm tomorrow night.

This is a positive move for thousands of small building and construction industry businesses in Melbourne.

These small businesses are the lifeblood of the Victorian economy and many have not qualified for financial support despite continuing to employ Victorians throughout the lockdown whilst incurring increasing costs in materials.

We know our industry has done everything it can to keep Victorians employed – including hundreds of apprentices – and everyone looks forward to getting back on the tools.

Building and construction is critical to our state’s economy being the largest full-time employer in Victoria, supporting nearly 300,000 jobs.

Building and construction also accounts for 45 per cent of our state’s tax revenue so it’s vital that our industry remains open.

Our sector has demonstrated since the pandemic began that it can adapt and operate in a COVIDSafe manner.

Therefore, Master Builders Victoria looks forward to hosting further discussions with unions, employer associations, and the State Government towards implementing a workable mandatory QR check-in system for businesses in the building and construction industry.

Master Builders Victoria has been encouraging members to ensure that they comply with all lockdown rules.

But our industry cannot afford to be complacent, and we urge all our members to review the COVID-19 Building and Construction Industry Guidelines and continue to take a risk-based approach.

Ms Casson added that display homes, sales suites, and colour selection centres can also reopen in Melbourne from Friday.
