When Treasurer Tim Pallas hands down his third state budget on Tuesday 2 May, it will include a number of items of interest to the building and construction sector. Several announcements have already been made by the Victorian Government in early March pertaining to the immense problem Victorians face with housing affordability. These should be of interest to builders of single and multifamily dwellings, particularly in regional areas where most of the legislation is focused.

We encourage members to attend the Industry Breakfast on 23 March at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds when the Treasurer will share some insights into what the budget has in store for the building and construction industry.

The Homes for Victorians plan includes a suite of policies aimed at assisting individuals trying to buy or rent housing, or access social housing options.

Among the major policy announcements are:

• Stamp duty relief for first-time home buyers
• An amendment to the off-the-plan stamp duty concessions
• Doubling the First-Home Owner Grant
• The levying of a Vacant Residential Property Tax
• A $1 billion Social Housing Growth Fund
