Carpentry apprentice Jack Shay from Maryborough was named the Master Builders Bendigo Section Apprentice of the Year and Employer-nominated Apprentice of the Year at the All Seasons Quality Resort Bendigo last night.

Jack was one of a pair of apprentices from the Bendigo region to be recognised for their dedication, skill and hard work.

The other winner was Chairman’s Award winner Jack Daley, a bricklaying and blocklaying apprentice from Huntley.

Master Builders’ Careers Officer Kathleen Peachey said, “Jack has been very keen on the building industry from an early age, and he particularly enjoys being able to see the finished result of his hard work, knowing he has contributed to the happiness of clients.”

Shay has earned himself a stock of operator’s licenses during his apprenticeship so he can “drive anything”, including his own business at some point down the track.

“In the shorter term, however, Jack is keen to give back to his boss for supporting him, and to progress to a supervisory role within the business,” Ms Peachey said.

“Chairman’s Award winner Jack Daley shows a clear passion for his work in brick-and blocklaying, and has made great advances in his career since completing his apprenticeship last year, “Ms Peachey said. “He is underway with his own business and has his own employees now, and gives full credit to the training provided to him by his former boss.”

Master Builders Chief Executive Officer Radley de Silva emphasised that apprentices are essential to Victoria’s building industry.

“We need a skilled workforce in the building and construction industry that will continue to provide the homes and infrastructure Victoria needs.

“Apprentices help to build our communities,” Mr de Silva said. “Acknowledging their hard work and dedication encourages apprentices across Victoria to continue their career path to achieve better and greater things in our industry.”

Regional winners are selected after an interview with a panel of three judges. Once awarded, they will be invited to attend the State Apprentice of the Year Awards on 12 May in Melbourne where the overall winners will be announced.
