Making the leap from tradesperson to registered builder can be daunting. It’s something many strive for but give up on half way through, wishing they had more time to study or help with what seems like mountains of paperwork required to go for registration in Victoria.

Master Builders Builder Registration Adviser, Peter Katsambanis, helps people get registered every day as part of his role. He will be conducting a seminar entitled Navigating the Builder Registration maze at the upcoming Build and Renovating Expo from 4 to 6 July, in a bid to shed some light on this complicated process.

“Many experienced tradespeople have the know-how to be good builders but lack the direction and time to successfully apply for their registration,” Peter said.

“I’m here to shed some light on the process and act as a guide, providing people with the tools they need and the information they require to get on track to registration.”

The seminar will help those thinking about applying for registration as a builder in Victoria to understand why they should be registered, the classes of registration available and the knowledge and experience required.

Seminar attendees will also gain an understanding of the key steps in the registration process and the information that they will need to submit in their application to the Building Practitioners Board.

“Applying for builder registration can be a complex and time consuming process,” Peter said.

“This seminar will outline what services Master Builders offers to member to help them to prepare their application the assessments involved.”

Peter said that although many members who applied for their builder registration had the experience and ability to be good registered builders, they were unable to pass the tests.

“The registration process can be gruelling,” Peter said.

“When combined with work and family commitments, it can all seem too much for some. This is exacerbated when people haven’t been keeping good records of their experience or aren’t confident with their reading, writing and interviewing skills.”

The aim of the seminar is to introduce people to the process and provide some insight into what might be expected of them.

“At the end of the day, it’s up to each individual to decide how much time and effort they can dedicate to the process and I’m here to help point them in the right direction,” Peter said.

“By coming to this seminar, people will be able to decide whether applying for builder registration is going to be right for them and can have a chat to me about how to get started.”
