On 12 September, Master Builders held its AGM Gippsland section in Traralgon to discuss relevant industry issues for members within the area. One of the key topics discussed were new power connection delays experienced by members in Gippsland, who many voiced strong concerns over the impact this has had on the completion of housing projects.  

A representative from AusNet Services provided a presentation to Gippsland members to respond to these concerns and explain the reasons for these delays. The core reasons provided for these delays were:

• The introduction of the Power of Choice Rule program in the other states, which was set out to improve customer choice and to expand the use of ‘smart’ electricity meters, have caused substantial delays for Victorian customers
• Last year’s industrial action in the North and East regions

In the presentation, AusNet Services provided assurance to Gippsland members that they have taken actions to improve the situation, such as the resolving of the industrial action in the beginning of 2018. In addition, they have allocated more resources to improve routine connection process and have commenced monthly meetings with all major retailers to improve the power connection process for customers

While AusNet Service’s explanation provided some level of assurance to members in the Gippsland area, Master Builders understands that delays in utility connections nevertheless remain an ongoing problem for builders and consumers. As such, Master Builders will continue to lobby on behalf of our members to push for reforms that will improve connection times in the state.
