A magistrate has recently ordered a carpenter from Hoppers Crossing to pay over $16,000 after an investigation by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) revealed the carpenter had performed work without being a registered builder.
The VBA charged the carpenter with carrying out building work and entering into a major domestic building contract that did not comply with the Domestic Building Contracts Act. The magistrate fined the carpenter $8000 and was required to repay the $8049 he had received from the homeowners.
In a media release, the VBA emphasised that all building domestic building work in Victoria costing more than $5000 must be carried out by a registered building practitioner.
