NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian today announced that a single border region will be reinstated that extends to ‘around 50 kilometers’ either side of the border. This new border region and a ‘border region resident’ permit will come into effect at 12:01am this Friday, 4 September.
This change is something that Stephen Donaghey and his team, along with many members in the region have been advocating for over the past month. Thank you to all involved in helping to get our industry back to somewhere near full capacity in this region.
The new permit allows a resident within the border region to enter NSW for the purpose of:
- To attend work or obtain educational services (where it is not reasonable to do this from their state of residence) – this relates to the building and construction industry
- To obtain necessary good or services
- For care or other compassionate reasons
These are the only reasons that a permit will be issued for.
Applications for the new Border Region Resident Permit will be made from here - we expect this to be updated in the coming days.
A border-region NSW resident who holds a permit:
- Is authorised to enter Victoria only for the reasons allowed in their permit (see above)
- Must not travel to any part of Victoria that is outside of the border region or is a COVID-19 area of concern.
A border-region Victorian resident who hold a permit:
- Is authorised to enter and remain in NSW only for the reasons allowed in their permit
- Must not travel to any part of NSW that is outside of the border region
- Must not enter NSW if the resident had travelled in restricted areas of Victoria (currently Greater Melbourne) or a COVID-19 area of concern in Victoria within the previous 14 days.
More information will follow from government regarding the definition of ‘around 50kms’.
