Incolink, with strong support from Master Builders, the CFMEU and several top-tier commercial contractors was recently involved in the launch of an important suicide prevention initiative, Bluehats. The program will be rolled out across commercial construction sites with the initial call out focusing on current Incolink Employer Members.
The initiative, lead by the counselling team at Incolink, and developed in consultation with industry stakeholders, including Master Builders’ OHS unit, is focused on upskilling onsite construction personnel to become persons whom workers can approach for support for assistance with mental health issues. These personnel can be spotted easily by the distinctive blue hard hats they wear on site.
During the launch event, presenters shared personal stories, many of them deeply emotional, but highlighting the message that standing together to make a difference can help instill confidence within the construction workforce that they are not alone in grappling with mental health matters.
Through the Bluehats initiative Incolink will deliver a number of onsite toolbox meetings, limited to audiences of 40 to help ensure effective message delivery. Following these meetings, participants can volunteer to participate in a one-day training course to acquire the skills for becoming a ‘Bluehat’ advocate on their own work site.
