Timber construction is poised to reach new heights in Australia as of 1 May this year when changes to the 2016 National Construction Code takes effect.
In contrast to the previous limit of three storeys (without specially designed ‘alternative solutions’), Class 2, Class 3 and Class 5 timber buildings will be permitted to rise as high as 25 metres, or nearly eight storeys.
Forest & Wood products Australia (FWPA) says the new code will lead to substantial cost savings for builders due to reduced construction times, and lead to greater environmental and economic benefits for Australia.
