Star of the Sea Aged Care is a new, state-of-the-art facility located in Torquay that offers both beauty and function. This project was constructed for Villa Maria Catholic Homes as an extension to the previously completed retirement village consisting of 70 private villas. The facility features a host of amenities, including 96 bedrooms, a commercial kitchen, serveries, a café, reception area, a chapel and a dedicated ward for the special needs of dementia sufferers. Each bedroom is equipped with a cupboard, dresser, television and a private ensuite with a shower, toilet and vanity units. Additionally, six accessible ensuites were constructed for disabled clients to meet the relevant building code requirements.

Beyond the period facade, a flawlessly planned, two-storey layout includes four large bedrooms, three bathrooms and several open-plan living spaces. The staircase presents a striking central focal point with soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows oriented to capture the northern light. Designed individually to maximise space on this recently re-zoned allotment in Rippleside. Within close to proximity to the beach, the four townhouses, comprising of one, two-bedroom and three, three-bedroom apartments offer a design of functional and beautiful spaces. The master bedrooms located on the first floor cater to elderly tenants, while the living areas with raked ceilings are designed to optimise space for the entire family. Balcony spaces were designed as a square layout to give the occupant enough usable space to sit down at a dining table and enjoy a barbecue. The study area for each dwelling allows extra space to spread out so the family is not confined to only one living area.
Featuring external finishes of exposed galvanised steel, aluminium windows and external timber screening, the facade of the new building was to fit in with the industrial style of the existing surroundings as well as the residential neighbours. The interior features state-of-the-art, ergonomic office furnishings, with much consideration going towards the work flow of the business and the comfort of the employees. The Armistead team worked in a unique situation in which they had to build within the current business site while the company was still operating and with residential neighbours to consider. Its successful completion is a testimony to the working relationship between client and builder.
To facilitate further growth of the newly established retirement village, the construction of the community centre included an extensive open-plan dining, lounge and games area with marble bar and kitchen; a separate media room and a library with 175 private mailboxes for residents; a hair salon; a gymnasium and in-ground pool and a cantilevered external roof with barbecue area overlooking a bowling green. Innovative additions include a pool/spa operating system coordinating the water, cleaning, hygiene and heating systems and an effective hearing augmentation system aimed to assist people with a hearing impairment to access communications.
The Ballarat and Clarendon College Fitness Centre project involved the replacement of the existing swimming pool with a new, 25-metre pool as well as an enclosure with connection to the exercise pavilion. The work included a new variable-speed rowing tank, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and exercise facilities above the tank at first floor level connecting with the existing gymnasium. There was significant coordination required for in-ground tanks and motor rooms to ensure pool and rowing structure services are fed efficiently and correctly. The excavation works in basalt were undertaken to achieve the significant, desired underground area. The mosaic tiling feature design highlighted the school logo including internal colour balustrade lining. Internal reinforced Perspex lining to staircases was undertaken, and an internal lift installed. Recycled timber seating and internal solid timber window frames were incorporated throughout the centre.
