The strategic design welcomes natural light throughout and warms the home from the articulated gallery to the master suite. This home has room to move for a growing family, with large living and dining paces complimented by raked ceilings and glazed walls that allow uninterrupted views of the in-ground pool. The home is entered via the timber jetty, which leads to the luxury foyer. This paves the way to the galley and four generous bedrooms. Externally, the dramatic roof that soars above and beyond the walls below, perfectly complements the streetscape and will leave visitors in awe.

Upon entering the site, the combination of glass and polished concrete are teamed perfectly with the interlaced beams, which collectively create the ideal foundation for the offices. The LED strip lights placed throughout the building are unnoticed during daylight and when evening falls they transform the building into a canvas of changing colours that can be programmed to any sequence. The foyer has a lavish reception and waiting area that is complete with soft wood acoustic walls, feature pendant lights and exposed concrete beams.

Externally, the home displays a beautiful blend of new reclaimed brickwork adding to the new low- maintenance Colorbond iron cladding. Internally, a fresh new life to the home has been achieved by providing a modern rustic feel with the use of solid materials including concrete and polished timbers, whilst still complementing the original style of the home.

Increasing the size of the main living space to include a sitting room, or home office, gave a diversity of options for future use of the space. As the family is growing, the need for an extra bedroom was a high priority, and introducing another two bedrooms into the second storey caters for this need. The small second bedroom and a dysfunctional living and kitchen space, was were transformed to provide a more modern, rustic, family friendly and free-flowing use of living space.

It is the restoration of the stables into a three-bedroom, one-bathroom family home that forms the basis of this stunning and rare renovation project. South-facing, the building is generally symmetrical in its U-shape, but not in elevation. In the side wings smaller rooms have been created such as a study and laundry. Above the kitchen and open plan living/dining zone a hay loft previously existed, and, while no longer present, the floor level of the loft remains identifiable by the positioning of the original loft beams suspended over the kitchen.

The exterior of the Colorbond roofing displays a blend of different textured materials and products, which have been finished to a standard that presents a high-quality façade. All bedrooms, open- plan kitchen, living, dining, hallway and laundry have polished concrete flooring, while the wet areas have been finished with a dark-gray tile. The kitchen includes reconstituted stone benchtops and gloss tiled splashbacks. By working closely with the clients, the result has achieved the most cost effective outcome.

Extra floor space has been added to the original design to accommodate the client’s lifestyle. The open-plan living area and alfresco area boasts an opulent raked ceiling, catering perfectly for the flooding natural light. The home has been designed internally and externally to be as maintenance-free as possible.

The works were undertaken by a negotiated contract with early design phase engagement, enabling the builder to work closely with the architect to refine the buildability of the project. Innovative design features include the construction of disappearing sliding, glazed backsplash panels between the kitchen and scullery, to enable joint food preparation. All doors included fixed shaped and matching panels from door head height to ceiling to avoid jamb heads and architraves.

The living pavilion to the left of the entry contains vehicle accommodation, a large alfresco dining space, and the main indoor kitchen with a fully functional butler’s pantry linking to the laundry/garage and alfresco area. All walls of the living pavilion contain large expanses of glazing which capture views on all sides. To the right of the entry an articulated “gallery” provides access to four bedrooms, all with expansive views.

Built on the site of an old pine forest, the natural elements of timber flooring and timber paneling work effortlessly against the stark contrast of steel linings, exposed steel beams, expansive glazing and soft furnishings. 15 metres of towering wrap-around glass windows reveal a natural vista. A handcrafted Oblica Over imported French fireplace and stunning charcoal-and-white patterned feature tiling add to the sheer opulence of this project.

Project: Barwon HeadsDesigner: Photographer: Website:The scope of this development required the design and construction of a multi-residential four-unit development to deliver comfortable living for a range of clients. The use of Silvertop Vic Ash cladding with Cutek oil provides a softened grey tone and, together with painted FC sheet and hardwood battens, create an earthy feel that ties into the site’s existing retained trees. The kitchens are the heart of the home, connecting to the living areas and external decks to establish an indoor/outdoor open living area. Each home has three bedrooms, one/two car garages and a private secure entry point to the share driveway to the houses.

Double-glazed windows are positioned to allow maximum cross ventilation, but when closed they offer a tight seal, minimising heat loss in winter. The perimeter walls have no gaps greater than 3 millimetres beneath them, requiring special dispensation to exclude sub-floor ventilation. Other inclusions are extensive wall, roof and sub floor insulation, 5 kilowatts of photovoltaic panels connected to the grid with provision for battery backup, and an innovative and voluntary installation of a bushfire sprinkler system that can be remotely activated by mobile phone.

Taking materials and expertise to their limits, the construction methodology is unique and extreme. The emphasis from start to finish is on quality, and this complex designed structure utilises components to their maximum whilst maintaining a strict budget. The external finishes to the building comprise polished concrete, glass, render, LED strip lighting and some minor feature Corten steel. The foyer has a well-appointed reception and waiting area, and the curtain wall glass façade allows for effortless flow between inside and out creating a stunning outlook.

Project: Gellibrand DELWP Depot, GellibrandDesigner: Photographer: Website: http://www.rendine.com.au/The redevelopment of the Gellibrand Depot required the transformation of a largely dilapidated and cumbersomely configured site into a highly functioning, safe workspace that can operate at an optimal level during peak fire season periods. Works include the progressive demolition of ten existing structures and the construction of eight buildings, including an office and amenities building, a dangerous-goods shed, a workshop-and-chainsaw shed and a burn-mix trailer shed. The environmental setting and ruggedness of the terrain influenced the overall aesthetics of the build, ensuring a smooth blend between the design and the surrounding environment.

Project: Ballarat Aquatic & Lifestyle Centre 50m Pool, WendoureeDesigner: Photographer: Website: http://www.awnicholson.com.au/en/The Ballarat Aquatic Centre facility has been designed to accommodate a 50-metre pool, which incorporates a number of features to highlight its importance to the community. Exposed curved steel rafters, green night lighting, precast concrete fins, and a splash of timber-coloured façade all combine to present a highly pleasing structure. Inside the facility, the pool takes up the bulk of the building footprint, with a plant room, change facilities and administration area to the south. The finishes are designed to be hardwearing and tolerant to the wet, humid and chlorinated environment.
