Edifice Construction
Project: CastlemaineDesigner: N/APhotographer: Liam Lynch PhotographyWebsite: https://edicon.net.au/A period home close to the centre of town with no heritage overlays isn’t easy to find in a town like Castlemaine. The owners of this home, once a tiny, run-down two-bedroom cottage, were charmed by the property’s façade and its history. They opted to retain rather than demolish the existing house instead adding a large contemporary extension. Designed for entertaining, clever partitioning separates the original property with its private master suite and sitting room from the modern, Scandinavian-inspired extension where living, dining, kitchen (including wine cellar) and bathroom spaces open to a stunning outdoor living area including a pool and landscaped gardens.

VR Builders
Project: MaldonDesigner: Photographer: Shayne Hill, Xtreme VisualsWebsite: https://vrbuilders.com.au/#1The project included turning an existing vacant block into three usable two-bedroom units with carports and easy access. The block was not easy as it had a steep slope, so heights needed be considered throughout construction. The units were part of an extension of the existing Tarrangower Village, within the same block. The units had to be similar in appearance and meet the historical overlay of Maldon. Access was very important, the design had to incorporate wheelchairs, motorized scooters, wider doorways, easy to clean and access wet areas and a fully functional kitchen with all the modern conveniences.
Eco Sustainable Homes Pty Ltd
Project: ChewtonDesigner: Tony Carter and Lyn CarterPhotographer: Shayne Hill, Xtreme VisualsWebsite: https://www.ecosustainablehomes.com.au/A key aspect of the sustainability of this home is the solar passive design utilising the inherent beauty and thermal performance of rammed earth walls. Air leakage was reduced by ensuring all external stud wall junctions were insulated and external windows and doors were also taped and sealed. A cantilevered roof on the north acts as both an aesthetically pleasing design feature as well as a functional undercover outdoor area that provides protection from summer sun and rain whilst allowing for excellent sun penetration during winter. The sun entering this area also provides warmth/thermal gain to an internal rammed earth wall in the passage off the living area. The water tank, carport and garage have been designed to provide natural protection from the afternoon sun in summer on the west for all living areas in the home.
