Project: Barwon HeadsDesigner: Auhaus Architecture, Kate FitzpatrickPhotographer: Carli WilsonWebsite: https://www.ldhomes.com.au/The concrete walls are the main feature of the home and have been carefully and neatly constructed, the salt and pepper finished concrete slab was poured over the hydronic heating. The joinery was made from American oak veneer and sprayed in a clear satin finish, cupboards doors and panels were chosen to match the ceiling linings. Ceiling and wall linings are mitred and return up to the void height of 7m. A custom brass pendant was designed and constructed to be the central piece above the dining area. Spotted Gum decking was layed around the pool and alfresco area. Kitchen benchtops were poured in place and then polished. Culcutta Marble splashbacks were used as a contrast and the theme was continued into the wet areas for benchtops.

The facility includes 20 cottage-style units, administration buildings, a multi-faith chapel, recreational spaces, landscaping and supporting infrastructure. Designed by renowned architects, Guymer Bailey, the Rivergum features various forms, shapes and sizes of nature’s best building material spans across façade cladding, screens, structural elements, ceilings, window shades and reveals, and signage, which provides an ever-present patina that develops over time. Rivergum boasts an environmentally friendly design that features a 230kW solar PV system, German imported automated louvers with world-leading water penetration and air leakage qualities, as well as a geothermal heating and cooling system that uses natural thermal properties of in-ground water to maintain optimum internal temperatures.

The layout makes a 25m2 house seem a lot larger than it is; with open plan living, dining and an adult retreat at the back of the home featuring a luxurious ensuite and walk-in robe. The study at the front of the house, behind the second living area, oozes sophistication with hard timber benchtops. With Adeline, what you see is what you get with luxury inclusions being standard. The courtyard right in the centre of the house makes use of the smaller blocks creating a sanctuary feel looking out through commercial double-glazed windows.

Aimed at young professionals or families on a budget, the home is sure to appeal to those looking to maximise value. Consisting of four bedrooms, two living areas, and an outdoor room, the impressive façade features a defined entry portico, which gives it intrigue and interest. The portico roof is raised which suggests a strong street presence. The rendered blade wall with the timber element to the portico enhances the entry providing a nice design touch. The minimalist façade provides a stylish statement and incorporates contemporary awning windows.

The kitchen features a butler’s pantry with an alfresco space opening from the meals area. There is also a retreat space, perfect for downtime.

Offering generous living and entertaining spaces for the entire family with secondary bedrooms zoned away from living areas. Despite the substantial amount of space on offer, the home fits comfortably on narrow blocks. The Harper façade is a unique take on modern contemporary design. The Cube adopts the principals of proportioned layered squares, predominantly rendered, with tasteful coastal colours that work well to compliment the landscaping.

This was achieved with a unique design using two rooflines -a high gable and a long skillion that offer an appealing blend of old and modern. The more traditional gable flows into the more modern skillion over the living area. The use of the solid second- hand red bricks, specially designed truss rafters, steel work and polished concrete floors gives the design the warehouse effect. The result is a highly functional and energy efficient small home.

Built over four ascending levels and bold and industrial in its design, the fixed commercial window to the front façade makes the most of the magnificent views of the You Yangs. Using a monochromatic brick and timber cladding and internally, keeping the colour palette to white, grey, black and dark timber the home is a stunning testament to perfectly executed, contemporary design.

Zoned living is created by the two master suites complete with ensuites and dressing rooms at either end of the home. The rear section also accommodates a second living space, two additional bedrooms and family bathroom. The central open plan kitchen, meals and living area complete with a gas log fire opens out to the huge courtyard via a wall of stacker doors. The kitchen also incorporates a full butler’s pantry and a servery window and bench, perfect for entertaining family and friends.

The Polished concrete floors and 6M high ceilings in the main living area give it a modern open feel. The use of Native sustainable timber Blackbutt fins down the north side of the building is matched in the decking and the theme is also carried on into the open plan kitchen living area, with matching engineered blackbutt flooring and Blackbutt kitchen doors, with concealed pantry door. It was also decided to create a beautiful feature ceiling out of Blackbutt lining boards that runs the full length of the home. The use of extensive green roof areas above the garage and second storey bedrooms will help the building blend in with its natural surroundings.

The goal of this build was to achieve an environmentally sensitive home which is also cost-effective. The home has no air conditioning and will not need it given the basic design principles, with plenty of cross-flow ventilation and high insulation levels. It also features rammed earth walls which help control the temperature and noise. The insulated concrete slab naturally contributes to sustainability, in summer it acts as a cooling element benefiting from the earths near-constant low temperature and can improve thermal comfort by absorbing radiant heat from the occupants and appliances. During winter when heating is required the thermal mass helps keep the dwelling warm.

The brief was met by the architect and builder, achieving a stunning architectural concrete home with a liveable floorplan. Externally the home includes a skillion flat metal roofing with a mixture of cladding materials such as Cedar timber, stone cladding, brick, render and stria boards to be in line with the coastal presence. Internally, high ceilings, applied celestial and picture windows to the living areas and timber bifold doors create a feeling of space. The large balcony area offers uninterrupted beach views. The kitchen features an under-mount, wall appliance tower, handless drawer system, integrated rangehood and a large stone island bench.

The eight existing heritage-listed living units were partially demolished, renovated and extended and two new living units were constructed at the rear of the premise and seamlessly integrated with existed structures. All underground services were upgraded including fire, water, stormwater, sewerage, electrical and communications; the site was also modified to ensure disabled compliance.

The double glazed timber windows and cladding on the outside of the home immediately catch your eye and as you walk through. Opening clearstory windows act as a solar chimney with cross ventilation. Sustainably harvested hardwood cladding and flooring sourced from a local mill, reclaimed wharf timber as gate posts, and the connection to estate recycled water, are just some of the sustainable features of this home. Solar panels are on the north-facing side with a large alfresco living area below.

Removal of existing asbestos in this area and the internal demolition of timber walls were required. A complete re-design of classroom and learning space areas was undertaken. Major structural steelworks were completed to provide a pop-up section in the middle of the building. This allowed for highlight windows to be installed, and along with skylights this ensured plenty of natural light to brighten the space. The new colour scheme provides a vibrant learning space and is incorporated into the paintwork, acoustic pin boards and joinery. Acoustic ceiling panels were also installed in the classrooms to provide better noise cancellation.

The building was designed to suit this highly prestigious private school, while reflecting its 164-year history with a simple design focused upon the internal and external architectural details. Delivering construction in a live operational environment in a significantly tight timeframe, with client events at times influencing the construction program, the smooth communications between all key stakeholders was imperative to achieving a high-quality result.

Project: Timboon P12, TimboonDesigner: Patrick ArchitectsPhotographer: Glen Watson PhotographyWebsite: https://www.fairbrother.com.au/The project was to complete a new building for the Senior school and refurbish five existing buildings to make them more suitable to the school’s requirements. The senior building was constructed on a conventional slab on ground with steel structure with clerestory windows providing ample light to the building. The feature of this building is the open floor plan with most of the classrooms separated from the centre common area by an openable wall, or no wall at all. The remaining five buildings were completely demolished internally and replaced with timber frame and plaster walls to separate the space. The “Timcon” building proved very troublesome as it was discovered to have a large amount of unknown Class A asbestos under the floor, existing cotton wiring house in metal conduit and insufficient structural detailing to support the proposed demolition.

It creates a therapeutic environment for its residents and forms part of Victoria’s Post Sentence Detention and Supervision Scheme. The facility includes 20 cottage-style units, administration buildings, a multi-faith chapel, recreational spaces, landscaping and supporting infrastructure. The facility features state-of-the-art landscaped gardens, communal areas and external fitness amenities to help provide therapeutic treatment for its residents. Designed by renowned architects, Guymer Bailey, the Rivergum features a visually unique two-storey administration building with a blackbutt cladding façade that has sharp, defining angles and gradients that fluently adapt to the angled terrain. Timber is used generously and thoughtfully across the project, and was a key aesthetic and sustainable feature of the facility.
